What’s with the Pipes?
While serving in the US Air Force, I found that I enjoyed the occasional tobacco pipe. I started with an $8 cherry wood pipe that I used for several months, until my eye was caught by prettier and more well-made pipes. Through the years I have found that many of my closest friendships and fondest memories are centralized around sharing a porch and enjoying a pipe together.
My personal favorite style is called the “Churchwarden”, which is now more commonly thought of as the kind of pipe used by most characters in the Lord of the Rings movies. I am mostly partial to these for the same reason that they were called “reading pipes” in Germany because the long stem keeps the smoke away from your eyes while reading.
I have always had a knack for crafty things like pottery and woodworking, and at some point the inevitable thought came to me that I could probably make my own pipe. I found a handful of Youtube how-to videos and gave it a swing. With classic beginners luck, my first pipe was nearly perfect, and smokes fantastic to this day.
Similarly to the oils, I started making pipes as gifts for friends and was encouraged to make them to sell, so I started working on developing my own shapes and styles. I try to keep a stock of pipes on hand and will keep them posted here but I also love doing commissions, so please reach out if you have a design you’d like to order!
